Why choose a Freight Forwarder over a Customs Broker for your logistics functions❓
By: Guillermo Guzmán Cano
Yesterday, I posted a meme pointing out that a Customs Agency/Broker is not always the best option as a Logistics Service Supplier. 😅 As you may know, this is based on FREIGHT LOGISTICS CHECKLIST (TN/S/W/20) by UNCTAD.
🌏 So, when it comes to managing a supply chain, the choice between a customs broker and a freight forwarder can significantly impact on operations. Here are five compelling reasons to opt for a freight forwarder as your logistics services supplier:
1️⃣ Comprehensive services
Freight forwarders offer a full suite of logistics services, including transportation, warehousing, and customs clearance (⚠️a wide range of services according to Freight Logistics Checklist). This integrated approach simplifies your supply chain management, allowing for seamless coordination and reduced administrative burden.
2️⃣ Cost efficiency
Freight forwarders often provide better pricing structures due to their established relationships with carriers and their ability to consolidate shipments (⚠️ obviously this may depend on the volume of operations; do not expect an suitable price if the trading volume is not worthy). This can lead to significant savings compared to using multiple service providers, including customs brokers.
3️⃣ Expertise in logistics management
While customs brokers specialize in customs regulations and compliance, freight forwarders possess broader expertise in logistics management (⚠️ it is a good practice to require evidence of performance, such as risk management procedures and customer recommendations). They understand the entire shipping process, enabling them to optimize routes and improve delivery times.
4️⃣ Enhanced visibility and tracking
Freight forwarders typically offer advanced tracking systems that provide real-time updates on shipment status (⚠️ remember, it is not just about using the tracking system, it is also to use it as a basis for problem solving). This transparency helps you make informed decisions and improves communication with stakeholders throughout the supply chain.
5️⃣ Flexibility and scalability
As your business grows, so do your logistics needs. Freight forwarders are equipped to scale their services according to your requirements, ensuring that you can adapt quickly to market changes without compromising service quality, (⚠️ it is essential that communication is always fluid; the supplier will be able to meet your requirements if they are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound; if you do not know what you need, trust me, your suppliers won’t know either).
✅ Choosing the right logistics partner is crucial for your business's success. By selecting a freight forwarder, you can streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance overall efficiency. ✅
